Daledo’s
Comic Book Reviews – No one loves you like the DOE
Daledo's Comic Book Review #398 - Movies
I went to the movies with my girlfriend this
weekend, and as I was waiting in line for my theater to be cleaned
before I could go in, I saw the lineup of posters off to the left
behind the ticket taker. All four posters were comic book movies.
They were for Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance, Avengers, The Dark
Knight Rises and Amazing Spider-Man. This should be an amazing year
for comics in cinema just based on Avengers and The Dark Knight
Rises alone. I for one, can't wait.
On to the reviews:
Aquaman #5 by Geoff Johns, Ivan Reis and Joe
Prado
The Lowdown: We have a new arc for Aquaman
starting with this issue, and if you haven't been reading Aquaman
because it's Aquaman, then you are missing out. All it should take
you to read this series are the two names on the cover; Geoff Johns
and Ivan Reis. By now, you know how good a writer Geoff Johns is.
He's one of the masterminds behind what happens over at DC. Ivan
Reis is a great artist and he's been on some big books as well, some
of them with Geoff Johns. The two worked together on Green Lantern
and he was also one of the artists on Brightest Day. In fact, he
drew the Aquaman sequences for the series.
What Happens: When the US Navy find an artifact
on a cocoon recovered in the last arc, they call on Aquaman to try
to figure out what it's for. When Aquaman comes in, they Navy falls
under attack by some group looking for the artifact. Aquaman chases
them down, but after an explosion, he finds himself lost in the
desert alone. I don't think you need me to tell you that that's a
bad place for Aquaman to be.
Should You Buy It?: With that creative team on
the book, it's hard for anyone that like comics to say no. With the
New 52 from DC, Aquaman has been relevant, both here in his own book
and in the Justice League book as well. We've seen what Geoff Johns
has done for Green Lantern, The Flash and the rest of DC Universe.
Surely he'll be looking to do the same with Aquaman, and do you
really want to miss that? This book gets the Daledo Seal of
Approval.
Secret Avengers #21.1 by Rick Remender and
Patrick Zircher.
The Lowdown: The man who has been writing one
of the best books that Marvel publishes, Uncanny X-Force, takes over
the writing duties on Secret Avengers with this .1 issue. I, for
one, am pretty excited about Remender taking over Secret Avengers.
If you've read his run on Uncanny X-Force, you know what he's
capable of. Not only is he capable of writing awesome epics, but his
ability to write a team book is nothing short of, well, uncanny.
With that kind of talent, I'm looking forward to Remender doing the
same type of thing on this book, which is a very similar type of
book. Much like X-Force, the Secret Avengers team is a team that
does black ops work and nobody really knows that it exists.
What Happens: Captain America and Hawkeye go
out on a mission, and Cap uses the opportunity to test Hawkeye and
see if he's up to the task over taking over for him.
Should You Buy It?: This issue basically
bridges the gap between Cap leading the team and Hawkeye leading the
team under Remender's run. It was a pretty decent issue. It's hard
to get a feel as to what the team dynamic will be like when it's
just the two of them, especially when the two have worked together
for years. The art by Zircher was pretty good as well. If you've
been reading Secret Avengers all along, I would suggest you reading
it, because it does bridge the gap between the two leaders. If you
haven't, and you're getting on the book because of Remender, you
could probably just wait until issue #22 comes out next week.
Daledo's Pick of the Week:
Winter Soldier #1: It's Brubaker x2 this week
with Winter Soldier and Fatale, but I had to take the new series.
See you in the comics,
Daledo

THE
WAUGHBAG REPORT - Weekly noise from our Waugh!
Waugh’s
Bag
Volume Two, Issue Four!
“Let’s Ride…..AGAIN!”
2007’s Ghost
Rider is not a good
film. At all. Directed (awfully) by Mark Stephen Johnson, the
“auteur” behind Daredevil,
it essentially did everything wrong that you could do with the Ghost
Rider character. It was dumb, boring, and a complete disgrace to the
character. So naturally, it made a butt-ton of money.
Somehow, someway, it was the number one movie at the box
office for weeks. This can be attributed to the devil, the fact that
our society is becoming more and more like Mike Judge’s movie Idiocracy,
or Nic Cage’s stunning hairpiece in the film.
Regardless of how it became so successful in spite of being
terrible, we’re getting a sequel.
And I cannot wait for it.
I know, I’m just as surprised as you are.
Ghost Rider is one of my favorite Marvel characters, and was
one of the first characters I was ever exposed to. Seeing Ghost
Rider riding around on his hellfire bike instantly brings me back to
being five years old. There’s just something about the character
that appeals to me. Of course he’s awesome from a visual
standpoint, but I’ve always like the origin of Johnny Blaze, how
he willingly sells his soul to save his stepfather, and must live
with the choice that he made forever.
Which brings me to my biggest problem of with
the movie, besides the fact that it’s completely, utterly
terrible: the origin. In the film, Johnny Blaze pricks his finger on
the devil’s contract, causing a droplet of blood to hit the
parchment. The Devil grabs it and says, “that’ll do”,
essentially making it so that Blaze is tricked into becoming the
Ghost Rider. Sure, he willingly meets with the devil, but we’re
led to believe that he wouldn’t have gone through with the deal if
he had that extra few seconds to think about it. In the comic book,
Blaze goes through with it wholeheartedly. He loves his adoptive
father enough to sell his soul for all time.
He does it out of love, much like Roxanne’s actions to
drive off the devil when he comes to collect. Making it so that
Blaze is tricked into selling his soul takes away the tragedy behind
the character. He did something to protect someone he loves, it
backfired, and now he must pay a huge, insurmountable price.
Another piece of disdain I have for the film is
the way they treated Ghost Rider when he was onscreen. Yes he looked
cool, but he had a total of three lines, all of which were
variations of him saying “guilty”. Every fight in the film
follows this pattern: Ghost Rider shows up, the bad guy knocks him
down, Ghost Rider gets up and whips him with his chain, killing him.
That’s EVERY FIGHT in the movie. No knockdown drag out awesome
fire battles, no dragging someone behind his motorcycle, nothing!
It’s like the animators only had enough time for one-30 second
part of the fight and decided to just reuse it for each battle.
So yes, I pretty much hate the original Ghost Rider film. It’s just lazy, and no one, with the exception
of Nic Cage, looks like they want to be in it. The only way I can
accept its existence is by embracing its sheer awfulness and making
fun of it (hence why I often say “let’s ride” in casual
conversation). It’s really not a good film, unless you can hammer down a
twelve pack while watching it.
However, I’m genuinely excited for the sequel, which
judging by the trailer looks like it will have some insane action.
This is largely due to the directors: Mark Neveldine and Brian
Taylor. Don’t believe me? Watch
this. Go ahead, I’ll wait.
Was that not the most insane thing you have
ever SEEN? Neveldine is behind a motorcycle on roller-skates with NO
HELMET! People should see this movie just because of that guy’s
commitment to getting that shot! Sure, Nic Cage is still in it, and
it features some pretty terrible/hilarious lines, but at least with
this movie, we KNOW what to expect from it: absolute, complete
carnage and over-the-top, unbelievable scenarios.
When I heard Neveldine and Taylor were helming
the sequel to Ghost Rider,
I was cautiously optimistic. I’m a big fan of Crank
(the sequel….not so much) and I liked the premise behind Gamer. As long as these two turn out something crazy in a good way,
and not in a Crank 2: High
Voltage way, then Spirit
Of Vengeance is going to be an absolute blast when it comes to
theaters next month.
Seriously. Yes, SERIOUSLY!
