Daledo’s Comic Book Reviews – No one loves you like the DO (as in D’oh) Daledo’s Comic Book Review #319 – Comic-Con So as I am sure most of you are aware, San Diego Comic-Con
was this past weekend. While there were a ton of cool announcements coming
out of Comic-Con all weekend, there were a couple cool reveals that really stick
out in my mind, and they all come from Marvel Studios, or so I think. You’ll
see what I mean in a minute. First off, after I get done talking about the
Thor movie and how they haven’t shown any of the helmets in any of the photos
with a friend the day before, Marvel reveals the helmets for Thor, Odin and
Loki for the Thor movie and they looked amazing. Secondly, they had the cast
of the Avengers assemble on stage, including Mark Ruffalo as the new Bruce
Banner and Joss Whedon as the director. Finally, the last reveal has led to
some speculation from myself and some other fans. It was a prop of the
Infinity Gauntlet what looked to be from Marvel Studios. There was talk that
it might appear in Thor, but I don’t think that it would work too well in
Thor. That got me to thinking how they made such a big deal about the
Avengers movie this weekend, that maybe it’s going to be a main part of the
Avengers movie. That might also explain why Marvel Publishing has also
created a mini-series that is called “Avengers & The Infinity Gauntlet”,
which issue one is due out in August. Anyway, there was way more than that at
Comic-Con, but those things were what stuck out to me the most. On to the reviews: Avengers #3 by Brian Michael Bendis, John Romita Jr. and
Klaus Janson The Lowdown: I’ve had mixed feelings about this book since the day it was announced. I liked the idea of the Avengers being the Avengers again, and not having to hide from the law and having all of the major players on one team again. The thing that had me skeptical about this book from the beginning was the fact that John Romita Jr. was the penciler on this book. Here’s a guy that has gone through several different art styles over the years and I think the one he’s on now might be my least favorite. So the book has that going against it, from me anyway. What the book does have in the court of public opinion though is that John Romita Jr. might be coming off his hottest work, that being Kick-Ass. So with the reforming of the Avengers and the fact that everyone seems to love John Romita Jr. now because of his work on Kick-Ass, it seems that this book should be prime for a tear. It’s doing great in sales. Issue two was number three in sales for the month of June. Does that mean great story though? What Happens: Apocalypse and his Four Horsemen come out of
the open time stream, and its up to the Avengers to stop them. Should You Buy It?: To me, so far I think that the first
three issue have severely under preformed. I’ve found the story to be not all
that exciting and the art is nothing short of an eyesore. The one redeeming
quality of the story so far has been the inclusion of Moh-Varr, even though I
hate his new name of The Protector. The one character that I thought that
Romita has drawn well and that was Spider-Man. I think his Spider-Man is
pretty good, while the rest of it; not so much. The worst is that he draws
Maria Hill too look like this butch chick that reminds me of some female
character from an 80s action movie that I can’t seem to recall at this time.
If anyone can help me with that, I’d appreciate it. Overall, it’s been hard
for me to read this sometimes. I’ve been looking forward to seeing the
Avengers the way they should be, but yet, I get this. I’ll probably just ride
it out until the arc is over. New Avengers #2 by Brian Michael Bendis, Stuart Immonen
and Wade Von Grawbadger The Lowdown: Luke Cage has been given the keys to the
Avengers Mansion and they go ahead to protect the world as he, and his team
of Avengers, see fit. The only problem is that when Doctor Voodoo sends Luke
Cage the Eye of Agamotto to keep it away from a demonically possessed Doctor
Strange and Daimon Hellstrom, Cage is mysteriously possessed as well. What Happens: The New Avengers try to stop the
giant-sized, possessed Luke Cage, all while trying to keep the Eye of
Agamotto from the possessed Strange and Hellstrom. Should You Buy It?: This book does two things that Bendis’
other Avengers book doesn’t. It provides you with a story that gives you the
feel of a New Avengers story, just like the 60+ issues he had written in the
previous series. After you’ve written a book for so long, you start to get a
certain feel for the title. Bendis has captured that feeling of his original
New Avengers run here, which shouldn’t be that hard to do since he was the
one who created it and hasn’t really stopped writing it. He certainly hasn’t
captured the feeling of a classic Avengers feeling yet in the Avengers book.
The other thing that this book provides that Avengers doesn’t is good art.
This book has great art all around, from pencils, to inks and to colors. This
by far is my favorite Bendis Avengers book right now, and is worth the read.
This book gets the Daledo Seal of Approval. Ironically, my favorite Avengers book right now is not
written by Bendis. Secret Avengers, baby!!! Daledo’s Pick of the Week: Time Bomb #1: The new project from Justin Gray, Jimmy
Palmiotti and Paul Gulacy for Radical Comics. See you in the comics, Daledo ********************************************************************************************************************* JETPACK COMICS LLC – We’re always BUYING - SELLING – TRADING all your
